Archives - October 2019

October stuff!

We kicked off the month with Ethiopian food.

I remember the first time I tried this cuisine, years ago in DC, and I didn't like it much. Thankfully I've come around. Mahider is excellent.

And Celisse got me on the Normal Club train. I didn't like their ice cream much the first time either, but I've since gone back for their salted vanilla soft serve with an almond ganache topping, and it's so divine. I crave it all the time. Good thing I don't live down the street anymore.

Kitties are always lurking in the shadows.

A while back I created a scavenger hunt for the SLC Cemetery, and I tried it again this year with my teenagers from church. I think they liked it.

Back at Normal. I tried the seasonal combo of black sesame ice cream with a yuzu cream on top. I dig it. Except I love all things sesame and wished for a bit stronger flavor.

Felicity was about to leave Hulu, so I had to finish the rewatch. This show was on during my college years, and the final season aired while I was on study abroad. My roommate and I begged someone to tape it every week, yes, on old VHS tapes, and we came back senior year to watch them. Some of them worked? But I never saw the final complete episodes and just needed to see it again.  #teamnoel

Sunday naps. Obsessed.

Jacinda and I ventured north one Saturday to Lava Hot Springs.

They did away with multiple entrance tickets on the weekend. Bummer. I liked to do a soak, go down the street for pizza, and come back for another soak before heading home.

But I did get to introduce Jacinda to Maddox! Raspberry butter and rolls and steak. Mmmmm.

Anthony decided to go play Battleball. It's like paintball, without the exploding balls. And then you end up with injuries like this .

Halloween is coming! My least favorite holiday, but my street goes all out, so I had to do something. I tried with the spider. Maybe next year we can add something else.

Neighborhood walk.

Leo is extra snuggly at night sometimes. And he does this every morning too, crawling all over us, right at 7:30am.

Miriam wanted a ride in the casserole dish. I was getting stuff ready for Canadian Thanksgiving!

And here we are, with my favorite Canadians.

And all the food. Same as American Thanksgiving.

Bought the perfect shelf to fit into the downstairs closet, that previously had zero infrastructure to store anything. Hooray!

Cousin Julie and Jesse made incredible food when Uncle Rex came to town. I wanted to eat so many ribs but could only manage a couple.

Packing for our trip to Austin. Sure wish the kitties could come along.

Instead they were checked on by our neighbor, who left us this darling note.

Made chicken noodle soup, maybe for the first time ever?

Found a child's sock in my house. No idea where it came from.

Can't keep plants in this house.

Cousin Chad got married, so we had a little party the night before.

Mom and sisters.

Cousin Kristine wanted to go on a hike while she was here, but we didn't have much time and it was quite cold. We managed a quick drive into Aspen Grove for a tiny walk.

More family time.

Brother's backyard.

Q is writing her name and wanted to write mine.

Ugh. Snow.

Met up with Jacinda to attend a Georgetown admissions event. Next door is Whiskey Street, where once upon a time my old DC roommate and her husband started a restaurant. That was short-lived, and then it became this bar. But a very cool old building in downtown SLC. I can barely see the outlines of their sign behind the letters.

With a neighborhood big on Halloween, how much candy do I buy?! I was stressed. And went with more quantity, but smaller pieces. Next year I'll get bigger candy and slightly less.

I dig these planners, so let's see if I can use one this year. Pen and paper over phone? Maybe helpful to track small goals and things.

Love when they're in the window when I come home.

Fall is here.

Kitties discovered the sink.

Terrifying decorations at Michael's. Maybe I should get it for next year's yard scene.

Tried out Nomad Eatery with Meghan, and it is awesome. Their second location is opening soon, closer to me, but this was worth the drive out towards the airport.

We had a Roberts family gathering, mostly to take our niece to the animal farm, and then have my belated birthday dinner. Well, a few people had another commitment come up that pushed our start time to 6pm instead of 3pm, most everyone ran late, and it was freezing that night.

I did finally get to have one of the famous apple cider donuts though.

Anthony and I stayed awhile to get our money's worth, and then my birthday dinner turned into take and bake pizza since we didn't want to cook at 9pm, but oh, well.

Someone at church has an excellent sense of humor.

Jacinda came over for cookie making and decorating, and of course we needed snacks.

Royal icing scares me. We did okay for some amateurs.

And then I made another soup - this time squash and carrot. Should have pureed more, but it was tasty.

Morning frost.

Fourth year! I got the OTF shirt. And it glows in the dark.

Helping me out at work. She's so cute.

Anthony went for a punk/glam rock sort of thing for Halloween at work, but I don't know if we pulled off the makeup.

Leo helped hand out candy.

And then Anthony decided to tell kids that we were out, and they could have goat milk instead. We got a good slew of kids for a couple hours, and then we got tired of handing it out. So we dumped a bunch into some kids' bags, turned off the light, and went down the street to hang out with the neighbors. Two sides of the street did a Hogwarts vs Death Eaters scene, and there were bonfires and hot dog roasting, and someone made 4 crockpots full of different soups and hot chocolate. That's the way to do it.
Happy October!
